Language learning and understanding can be thought of as coordination problems –language users must coordinate their representations and behaviors with others. The first part of the talk will look at how children coordinate with other speakers at multiple levels – individuals, situations, and communities. The second part of the talk will look at a related question in adult language processing and will connect it to the topic of risk. I will present work that has adapted methods from the economic decision-making literature to look at how various aspects of language understanding are affected by response-contingent costs and benefits.
