Symposium on the Indigenous Language Communities of the Californias (SILCC) - November 21, 2019
The Linguistics Department co-sponsored the first Symposium on the Indigenous Language Communities of the Californias (SILCC) which was held on campus at the Price Center on November 21, 2019. With over 100 attendees, this full day event featured indigenous perspectives about the current status of languages in the region and the efforts underway to preserve and reclaim them for future generations. Perspectives of the Kumeyaay, Kumiai, Cahuilla, Cupeño and Luiseño tribal communities of Southern California and Baja California and their experiences with language reclamation work in their communities were among those represented.
UN declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL), with the message “Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation”.
The event was co-sponsored by the Fulbright Association (San Diego Chapter) and the following UC San Diego organizations: Intertribal Resource Center, Global Education, Graduate Student Association, Department of Linguistics and the Division of Social Sciences.
